Hip-hop artist e.d.g.e. drops his latest creations in a small compilation called Triple Play. This short set has three tracks that you can check out which features old school beats and sounds to please your ears.

Catching up with e.d.g.e., he tells us that “Triple Play is a combination of freeverses that [he] recorded to promote [his] upcoming Refined Hype-sponsored EP the29thyear, which features Jeff Spec, Dave Ryan, Claire Mortifee and production from Beewirks, Roswell, Jeff Spec and Savage Beats.

Jaykin did it again.

Jaykin released his highly anticipated mixtape, Sneakers and Video Games at Gangsta Boogie Monday at Shine Night Club.  All the right elements were there.  DJ Seko (The Freshest) and DJ Wataru (Japan) killed it with the classic hip hop jams.  I heard songs I didn’t think I’d ever hear at a club.  Robson 800, a bboy crew from Japan, got on the floor and showed the crowd some sick moves.  The room was filled with hip-hop enthusiasts.  Hip-hop was definitely alive that night.

Jaykin set it off with his new track “Shorty”, followed by “Galaga”.  SonReal jumped on stage and performed “Here We Are”, a Jaykin feature from The Light Year Mixtape. District 36 and Jeff Spec then laced us with the sneaker-heads anthem, “On My Feet Part 2″.  The crowd and went wild.  Even sneakers were coming off peoples feet!  Jay hit us with a few throwbacks from On the Humble.  After living in Japan for a year and a half to work on his craft, Jay had to show his love.  “Nippon” was his homage to Japan.  Japan may have his heart but Vancity is Home.  D-City joined Jay on stage to perform their most dowloaded single off  Sneakers and Video Games, “Home”.

After the long anticipation, JayKin has finally released his latest mixtape project titled Sneakers and Video Games. The featured artists in the mixtape includes D-City, Donna B, Paul Skratch, Jeff Spec, and District 36, all of which are part of a heavy-weight lineup of talents of Vancouver’s hip-hop scene. The list of the producers involved with the mixtapes includes Hero, C-Infamous, D-Smooth, Beatsme, Deli, Lo Keynote, Ess, and The Mets. As introduced by the man himself, Sneakers and Video Games is a different approach to music than his previous works. He labels it as being a more personal project as he is shedding light upon his life through a sneakers and video games inspired theme, two interests of his life that has helped shape who he is today.  JayKin tells us that through taking time off after On The Humble’s release in 2009, traveling and meeting new people have opened up his mind. JayKin also told us that this fun project is something that he had to release, and if you listen carefully and compare it with his past works, you can definitely see that he had taken a big step on the overall thought pattern in the creation process of this mixtape. He has taken a different approach in executing his music while still utilizing his skills as a rapper honed throughout the years. Sneakers and Video Games is not only a mixtape exhibiting JayKin’s latest progression as an artist, but through the hours, money and hard work along with the amount of creative thinking that he has placed in this project, it’s a mixtape that no one should pass on.

With this mixtape, JayKin adds another sniper bullet to his content arsenal. Quickly on the rise within Vancouver and making a lot of noise outside of the Vancouver scene, JayKin has been hard on the grind to finish this project of his. Sneakers and Video Games features a wide variety of different sounds, including sounds from original games and their 8-bit hosts. One of the most captivating songs on the mixtape is “Galaga”, derived from the arcade space shooter game, Galaga. This song is a collaborative effort with D-City and has powerful lyrics, sounds, and hooks. This song is a definite favourite of the Crew.

The first single off this mixtape is “Home”, a track with hip-hop duo D-City, turntablist Paul Skratch and singer Donna B. This was pre-released a month back and it speaks about their home place. It is tracks like this and V.A.N. that reinforce JayKin’s message about their home and bringing it home. As you can already tell, this mixtape is quite a personal project with all the topics and sounds being close to what JayKin is feeling.

“Shorty”, the next single off the mixtape, reinforces this personal aspect of the mixtape. This song touches on various topics revolving around a relationship and speaks generally about how she chases after a lifestyle without knowing the reason for the chase. He tells us to look forward for his video for “Shorty” which will help illustrate the interpretation of the song.

With songs like “Driven Part 2” and “On My Feet Part 2”, JayKin touches on more of his personal side. “Driven Part 2” is now the third addition to all the “Driven” songs that he has, including “Driven” and “Driven Remix” from his past mixtape. “On My Feet Part 2” is an effort with hip-hop artist Jeff Spec, branching off Jeff’s original mixtape “On My Feet”.

JayKin finishes the whole mixtape with the 8 Bit Into/Outro at the beginning and end of the song. As these songs start off, the sounds may seem strange, but it has successfully outlined and helped introduce the video game inspired tracks that is seen throughout many of the tracks. The Intro is instrumental but the Outro features JayKin’s lyrics.

The mixtape has exceeded our expectations and it’s good to see another Vancouver hip-hop artist experimenting with a different style and going out of the box creatively to not only draw a new fan-base, but taking a challenge to rap over 8-Bit instrumentals. JayKin pushes the limits of an artist as he has done a lot that he doesn’t usually do which includes executing vocals, utilizing the Japanese language, and working with new producers. JayKin didn’t let us down and his next project is just around the corner. Shane Eli graced the stage at SUP FU? Wednesday night at Fortune Sound Club.  At 6’6″ Canada-born, Los Angeles-based hip-hop artist/producer Shane Eli definitely towers over the competition. The producer behind Diggy Simmons’ single “What They Been Waiting For,” Shane has opened for Common, Talib Kweli, Ludacris and Ciara and is now looking to take his own career to the next level.

Shane Eli just released his first album “The Push” independently, via DJBooth.net. This was his first show in Canada, after the release.  He had been anticipating to perform here in Vancouver, where he once resided, in front of friends and family.   Jeff Spec went up and performed “Mic Bully”, a recent collaboration with Shane, off Sneakerboxxx.  JayKin also made a guest appearance, with a short freestyle.  I thought it was pretty dope when Shane jumped into the crowd and started talking to his fans right after he finished his set.

With no ego, he made it known, that he belongs on the stage.  Shane’s passion about creating music is evident through his songs.  His music is a reflection of himself.  I’ve often talked about “feeling” music, and how everyone interprets it differently.  This dude, is heart-felt.  I have no doubt that he will go far.  It’s just beginning…

The justalilhype! Crew visited Terracotta Modern Chinese Restaurant for our after-summer reunion. We had a chance to catch up on our summer vacation and talked about up and coming projects for justalilhype! Terracotta’s hosts were wonderful and honoured us with the exclusive lounge area, The Emperor’s Room was for us to relax, chill and have an overall good time. The aesthetics of the interior design of the restaurant is inspired by ancient Terracotta Warriors of China’s Qin Dynasty. The atmosphere was laid back and comfortable yet at the same time refreshingly modern. Our eats of Chinese tapas were more than satisifying and we were treated with their signature drink, Chivas & Green Tea. If you get a chance to swing by, make sure you try to the Aloe Vodka! Terracotta is located at the heart of Gastown, 52 Alexander Street.

The Charming Man aka Theopilus London HYPED up the crowd last night at Fortune Sound Club.  Theopilus London is an electro/hiphop rapper from Brooklyn, NYC.  He made his label debut releasing a couple mixtapes, Jam! (2008) and The Charming Man (2009).  I have heard so much about this man that I was so curious to see what he was like live.  Let me tell you, he’s on another level.  He owned the stage and made it look like nothing, a natural performer.  He kind of had a hint of Marvin Gaye in his stage show.  His beats are incredible and that’s to say the least.  You know an artist shows appreciation for his fans when you let them chose your final 3 songs.

One of the more rarer art forms of street culture exists turntablism, the art of using vinyl, turntables, and mixers at the most basic incarnation to create a unique sound. The turntables become the turntablists’ instrument of choice.

Lately, the turntable scene has been dying a bit. With the decrease in popularity and glory of the DMC championships and other scratching sessions, turntablism has become almost a separate class of street culture as a whole.

In a bid to allow people to explore the art and beauty of turntablism, Paul Skratch started an event known as SKRATCHER. IT WILL BE TAKING PLACE SEPTEMBER 12, 2010 AT THE FRANKLIN ROOM. At this FREE event, people will be exposed to live scratching as well as having access to open turntables. There will be live performances of many sorts and free loopers, t-shirts giveaways, and much much more. Artists to perform include Relik, Hedspin, Jolin Ras, P-Luv, Mike MSA, Krisp, Panakronic, Wunderkut, and Paul Skratch himself.

To even people related to the scene, all sorts of hip-hop heads will be coming out to this free event, so this will be a good time to connect with some of Vancouver’s best in the scene.

600+ people, R.O.C tracks bangin’ in the Function-One, could it be?  Yes, that’s DJ Neil Armstrong. Fortune Sound Club hosted the KNOW?SHOW x Etnies AM Getting Paid Party with DJ Neil Armstrong.  Like all the parties at Fortune, this was obviously another one of those crazy nights.

If you didn’t know,  Neil was Jay-Z’s official world tour DJ of 2008/2009.  I’m sure you all remember when Jay-Z was on tour here in Vancouver right?  It’s said to be that Neil is now the “highest strata of DJ existence”.  I had the chance to catch up with him at the club and at ALIFE.  He is probably one of the most down to earth, easy going and nicest person I’ve ever met in his caliber.  One thing that stood out for me, the most simplest thing,  he said is to “be yourself”.  Look at how far it’s taken him.

The justalilhype! Crew attended the official launch party for the release of BANDIT-1$M’s latest Fall 2010 collection. The party was held at their design studio and new shirts were available for guests to purchase. Throughout the night, people enjoyed themselves with music, cupcakes, and drinks. Similar to the concept of the latest lookbook curated by BANDIT-1$sm where they photographed models from all ages, the event welcomed everyone from streetwear enthusiasts to friends and family. The justalilhype! Crew attended Mavericks, an event hosted by Nike Sportswear and Off The Hook. The event not only celebrated Montreal’s Festival of Fashion and Design happening between August 4th-7th, but it allowed people to create their unique AW77 Nike Hoodie. Guests attending the event picked their color of choice and graphics offered and got the chance to create their own customized sweater. This process of embroidery happened live and music throughout the night was provided by DJ Cosmo and DJ Psychology. Hit the jumps for more photos.
