Tony, for your store Super Bored and Brag Garden, they carry a few exclusive Taiwan brands. You are currently the only North American distributor for these brands, how did you encounter these brands and what’s the story behind each of them?
I met STAY REAL in Summer 2008 when they were just selling at the corner of the Toys Festival 2008, they didn’t even have a proper booth. They just had 2 boxes and were selling their products on a chair. I brought my first STAY REAL tee from there and later figured out the girl that sold me the tee is currently the international sales manager. She also told be that she was very nervous when she sold me the tee at that festival because she knew I was the one that created the DoraBob design.
For OUTERSPACE, the founder Leo actually really likes Dorabob himself and the WrongWroks brand. They were started a year ago and they knew me through STAY REAL. We went for dinner and they really wanted OUTERSPACE to go international. Their designs are very brave; it’s not just a tee or a cap. You can see that sometimes they do designs that are very humorous and are actually not for sale or they are very limited in production. Leo and I have some huge projects coming up at the end of the year in Taipei.
Back in 2007, we worked on our first collaboration with Phantaci, and since then we didn’t really talk to each other until last time I went back to Taipei to meet up again. They also wanted to have their brand in Canada, so we became their official dealer.
Compared to the above brands, STAGE is one of the newest to our collection and I feel lucky to have them in my store. I know a lot of local Vancouver street wear stores were inquiring the retail dealership in Vancouver and I got it in one phone call.
What made you decide that the above brands are good to carry in your stores?
As long as I like the brand and it’s not too expensive for my customers, then I will get it. And of course, they have to like me and my brand too.
Throughout the years, you have met many different models. Can you tell our readers how you’ve met the various models you have featured on your designs and artwork?
I met NAT on the streets. It all started when I asked her “Hey, you want to take some photos?” She is the most popular model in WrongWroks’ history and also made the “WrongWroks always has a hot Asian model” rule! Since she started modeling for us, we have been getting feedback that a lot of guys were collecting her pictures and also the model photos that we took for her in WrongWroks. She has definitely created a lot of HYPE behind the trend of WrongWrok’s girls wearing guy t-shirt thing and she has also has helped create the best selling photo tee of WrongWorks. She decided to not model for us because she got too much attention that it actually invaded too much of her personal life. I met Eisle from Facebook. Edith, I met her from a friend’s friend but she disappeared after one photo shoot. For Zoe, I met her back in a fashion show. She was the only girl that I thought was cute throughout the entire show. She is also our only white model in the past four years of WrongWroks history. Dodo was recommended to be by Taiwanese celebrities. We did a lot of photo shoots together and now she has became a signed model in Taiwan and is seen on many TV Shows. Nikki Hsieh is celebrity and movie actress and one of the prettiest models I have ever met in my real life. My eyes almost fell off when I met her. One of my models from before actually opened her own model agency and recommended Samantha to me for more exposure. Lastly, Sylvia is our newest model and she’s my workmate’s friend. She has a lot of photo shoots coming up. Keep an eye on her! Another up and coming hottie!

It isn’t just WrongWroks in the WrongWroks stores. Maybe this another way for WrongWroks creator, Tony Wong, to defeat the normal perceptions of people, where flagship stores carry only their own items. Within the two stores Superbored and Brag Garden, there are many different brands available, such as StayReal, Outerspace, Stage and Phantaci. In this interview with Tony, we asked him about his brands and selecting the brands.
