Kevin Williams is a reseller and a blogger. He started a blog online called “Space Beach”. He talks about his online blog and also his passion towards the fashion industry.
Describe yourself
I am a pretty easy going guy. Obviously I am big into fashion and I am really looking forward to working my way into the fashion industry in the years to come, but right now I am just a reseller; I have been doing it for two years now. I would honestly say I would spend around five hours a day online searching for dope shit. Not a bad job.
What is one thing you would want to tell a foreigner about Vancouver?
It’s an underrated as a city in terms of its people, shopping and nightlife. The shopping for one is unbelievable. Visvims, Neighborhood, Clot, Original Fake, BBC, and Comme Des Garcons; you can get all the above in Van City.
In terms of fashion, what do you think makes up our city’s trend? What do you think influences Vancouver’s fashion trend?
Vancouver is such a large city. I would say there isn’t really dominating style in terms of fashion trends. From my experiences of going to local events though you tend to see more of the skater image probably due to the fact that the skate scene in Vancouver is huge.
Growing up in Vancouver, what have you learned about street wear and fashion locally and how has your sense of style developed?
For me, Vancouver has always been hip hop. Growing up, I was always into the urban style of clothing. I guess it wasn’t until maybe when I hit 16 when I was first introduced to street wear and had more knowledge of it through different forms of media whether be music videos or magazines, which is when I really got into it. Obviously Pharrell has influenced me a lot as well. It was about then when I became more aware of local shops, and that’s also when my interest started to grow.
What kind of girls do you look for?
I like a girl with a good sense of style. Umm.. a fly sense of style you know? Gotta be unique… and a nice personality. Definitely need to be easy going. A big booty doesn’t hurt either.
What is your Space Beach blog about?
The Space Beach blog started as a personal site. It started with day to day stories from my life but I decided to evolve that into more of a fashion orientated blog. Right now it’s just me and one other writer and basically it’s just a mixture of things. Touch of our day to day lives, music and fashion, a large focus of life style behind street culture.
What’s the concept behind the name “Space Beach”?
SPACE BEACH. This is top secret and NO ONE knows about this! Space Beach originated from a Ralph Lauren design that Pharell Williams picked up and right now it’s one of his more popular designs currently in his line of BBC. Anyway, My friend and I decided to take Space Beach as a name mostly as a joke. We like to think we started the SPACE BEACH HYPE and we will take credit for it. We got it hyped up on different forums and what not. Now we started our blog with that name and are now in the process of forming a site together.
For me, “Space Beach” is like a getaway; kind of like my Eutopia, a place where there is no stress or worries. Flying Martinis!
What’s your main goal of this project?
First we hope to gain more readers. We want to make a well known site where people can visit daily. I’m also hoping that through this project, I can make a mark in the fashion world as a writer and pursue a career in writing.
What are your favourite places to chill or hang out in Vancouver?
I like to kick it in Gastown; that is like my second home with all the shops there… Water Street Cafe is definitely my favourite place to eat down there! It’s always good for a lunch in the middle of the day. Other than Gastown, I like chillin’ at the beach in the summer and I’ll hit up Whistler once in a while.
Do you have any rants about Vancouver? What changes do you think should be happening in our city?
I like Vancouver as a city but I think the city shuts down a little too early. Also, I’m not a huge fan of the night life here. I look around at the people walking around at night and wonder why am I there. That is right, I am calling out you pop collared Jaeger Bomb drinking clowns!
What’s the last place you have traveled? Are there any places you have traveled to which have left you a good impression and want some taste of that back in our city?
NYC (New York City) in January. This was by far the best experience in my life. It really opened my eyes in terms of the opportunities in the fashion world. The scene was incredible. Vancouver can’t even compare with it. Even just walking around, the fashion scene, people cared about how they dress.
What is HYPE to you?
HYPE to me is life because that’s what my life is based on. I wouldn’t be able to do what I do for a living if it wasn’t for HYPE. I wouldn’t be able to be a reseller and make money through selling clothes. I wouldn’t have met all these friends across the world without the fashion industry.
SHOUTOUT
“Definitely keep a look out on the site. We are going to have some really good things coming out. We are going to start making some short films, get some sort of an online store going and a blog that people will be able to read from day to day. Big shout out to my partners: Sarom Sok and Jason Wong!”
