“IN HYPE WE TRUST” X EMILY CHEN

This episode of “IN HYPE WE TRUST” goes in depth with justalilhype!’s staff reporter, Emily Chen. She has a down-to-earth view of life and describes her views on HYPE. She also talks about her views on Vancouver as a city she loves.

Why do you think people should visit justalilhype!?

I think people should and would visit justalilhype! because it helps inform and connect Vancouver. Maybe it’s just me, but it’s hard to find the happenings and going-ons in Vancouver. This is why I love magazines/websites/newspapers like justalilhype!. Sure, there are always clubs and bars that one can go to, but what about during the day or a lazy cash-strapped night? justalilhype! helps to highlight the other sides and aspects of Vancouver life that are sometimes buried beneath our busy days of school, work, and the norm.

Describe yourself

I’m just me. Really, I go to Simon Fraser University, have a part-time job, and try to stay on the straight and narrow (laughs). I wouldn’t say I’m unremarkable nor boring though; I have my moments, but I definitely don’t need to be in the limelight all the time. The thing is that when I go out to a club or party with my friends, we go hard, so for most of the time I just chill and bum around doing nothing all that special. When the mood strikes, you know it’s going to be an epic adventure. By myself, with a small group of close friends, or in the midst of a crowd, I can be content.

justalilhype! focuses around all areas of HYPE. What do you think is the most important aspect of Vancouver’s HYPE?

I don’t think there is one aspect of Vancouver’s hype that is more important than another and if anything they all mesh and play off one another. That is the great thing about Vancouver; it has something to offer everyone, no matter what you are into, and if Vancouver doesn’t have it already, it is always open to a new scene.

Where do you see yourself and justalilhype! in a few years?

In a few years, I hope justalilhpe! will have exploded and have become something great, not that it isn’t now. I would love to see justalilhype! featured in other magazines and website, and I would love for it to be a website that people visit regularly and really rely on for news about Vancouver. A printed version of justalilhype! would be super amazing as well! As for my involvement in a few years, I really have no idea. That is not to say that I don’t believe in or support the magazine, but my life, as always, is up in the air.

What is HYPE to you and why “justalilhype!”?

HYPE is what you bring to a party or event – call it what you may. An event is only as good as you make it, and that applies to any type of activity, be it a party, club event, or a relaxed dinner with friends. HYPE isn’t about advertising and the amount of money spent; it’s about the excitement, and fervor that comes from you. Remember those high school days just hanging out in a random park or taking long bike rides with your buddies, not old enough to do anything, but too old to play alone with your toys? Now think about how every time those memories or old pictures come up you smile, recall the happiness, and call them the good old days. That is HYPE. The party and materials doesn’t make the night and memories. You do.
