The generation that was blessed with the plentiful access to technology while pursuing their goals and dreams may often be accused by their predecessors as “having it easy”. But how exactly are they having it easy? Are entrepreneurs really having it easy or has technology actually made it more difficult for the average person to succeed?
Taking a look at what is available, the average entrepreneur has access to so many resources, all thanks to technology and especially the internet. Most of the market research they need to do can be done through a search engine, regardless of industry or scale. The next step would be to get funding, which they can search the internet again for their available options and the best alternatives to get funding. From there, they search for suppliers in which communication, logistics, transportation, and payment have all been made extremely easy through today’s technology. If someone needed to support their business, but was on a low budget, there are options for that. As technology progresses even further, we come upon a concept known as cloud computing. Inventory tracking, credit and debit payments, file storage and more are all done away with because everything they need can be accessed through the internet and their computers. More and more start-ups are heading in this direction, putting their own twist to a previous idea in order to gain more entrepreneurs’ support for their own business. It seems with all these tools, even a child can start up their own business, with a little bit of guidance and financing from their parents of course – but that’s not so much different from most entrepreneurs today anyway. Still the question is at large: is this generation in a better position to succeed than previous generations?
This generation may have access to a wealth of resources and support because of technology, but it also works as a double edged knife – you are not alone in this world trying to do what you want to do. Those who have helped you and provided you with information over the internet will just as easily provide the same information to the next person.
Universities are constantly pumping out educated individuals because the need of higher learning and the ability for critical thinking has become more pertinent than it has in any generation before. Information is there, but if you do not know how to utilize it properly, it will only stay as information. And with the information that is there, you have more reasons to be hesitant about starting your own idea. Technology also opens your idea and concept up to a critical population. Information about your business is spread across the community and a few wrong moves and the masses will hear about it. No longer can you pay off the reporter to prevent your story from being leaked. Technology blesses an entrepreneur with a wealth of information and access to resources which can power their idea to levels that they never could have dreamt of. Technology also gifts the entrepreneur with competition from everywhere around the world. The American dream hasn’t changed – only the bed upon which you sleep on to reach that dream has.
