The justalilhype! Crew met with model and actor Calan Breckon on a mild and hot Sunday to discuss what people take for granted and why he is his worst enemy and also his faithful sidekick.
If this is a short story, would you consider yourself a flat, or round character?
Well I definitely would be a round character because there is lots of different things that go into being myself and what I do, what I’m interested in, what I involve myself with its not just one dimensional, lots of different dimensions to it.
What is the antagonist in your life?
My antagonist is probably my inner struggle for myself; I tend to be my biggest critic all the time 100 of the time. I always see things and I tell myself ‘oh I can do that better.. .’ But on the flip side I’m also my best cheer, I say ‘You know what? I can do that, I can get that’ I consider myself always being a go getter. If I want something, I go get it, knowing I will achieve it because anything that I have set my mind to thus far I have achieved in. A friend of mine convinced me to go backpacking across Europe, I told my friends ‘OK I’m going to Europe for two years.’ I got my visa and travelled through Europe alone for fifteen months. I can be my worst enemy at times, when I other think, I just stop and take a step back.
That must have been a great trip
Yeah it was the best trip of my life!
Describe the first time you discovered modelling
First time I discovered modelling, I was seven or eight, my mother put me in acting classes with new image. It was down in the Millersville area, I remembered we did a lot of camera stuff, some fun stuff, and the end recital, and there was a modelling event at a restaurant. All of us did the catwalk, I was like ‘Wow this is fun!”
What is the biggest disadvantage of modelling in Vancouver?
Vancouver is not the place to be modelling, plain and simple. If you want to do anything model wise like high fashion, you will have to be in New York or LA. There is this growing scene in Asia, big things are starting to grow there , but as for Vancouver they have their small things ,and a lot of times people want it for free, they will say ‘Oh I will do a favour for you , if you do me a favour’ So it actually ends up not being paid. Right now my focus is acting, but if I something model wise were to come up, I would pursue it. Right now acting is my life’s ambition.
Do you see bridges between modelling and acting?
I definitely see bridges between those two. Aston Kutcher started off as a model himself, he was modelling Calvin Klein, Tyra Banks, yeah she is not exactly an actress, but she has been in many movies and television shows, she started as a model. There are a lot of crossovers. Many actors and actress are the spokesperson for products like shampoos and lots of different stuff. Models are slowly falling into the background many different aspects other than just modelling.
Paint a picture in your head of what you plan for the future, now describe if the painting is a brush canvas a pastel creation, or some abstract form that no one can label.
I really like this question. I definitely would be a canvas, no I would actually be a wall on my apartment, or a wall that fades off onto the side because that would be my future and it is not done yet. As the mural goes on there would be crazy colours , like fun yellows, reds, oranges, greens, and there would be faces of certain people painted in certain spots, big buildings, fun times, music all sorts of things that would intertwine , and then spreading off as it goes on to a white plain canvass onto the other wall as it rounds the corner ,that would be the future that would be painted out for myself., and I do whatever I want to it as I go on, because my future is whatever I want it.
Let’s take a walk. What do you find beautiful? Is that different from what society finds beautiful?
Large landscapes hit a note with me. I always go for hikes in Vancouver, to escape and enjoy the view. In this one park there is a nice awesome hike, and at the end of it there is this amazing view of all the land in the area, it’s breathtaking to sit and relax, and say ‘you know what, it is awesome to be here.’ Going up to Grouse mountain and seeing the city, when you are up in Grouse mountain downtown looks so small, compared to when you are in it you think it is so big. I love being up somewhere up high and seeing everything spread out in front of me, and that’s what I find beautiful.
Is that different from what society finds beautiful?
In the modelling world it is more physical and specifics. I have some gorgeous friends who are the most stunning and some are models some aren’t. What I see as beautiful, other people may look at it and say ‘Oh well that is nice. I see that every day.’
So a lot of people take beauty for granted?
Yeah exactly, a lot of people take especially little things for granted. Europe was really flat and there weren’t a lot of things to go look at. In London it was clean, but a lot brick and no nature, it taught me that the abundance of nature Vancouver, seeing all the mountains seeing all the trees is something I shouldn’t take to granted.
What does HYPE mean to you?
HYPE to me is an energy that could be anything. Imagine a ball that you have in the palm of your hands. It could be whatever you want it to be, the more you think about it, the more energy you put into the ball, the more hypergenic it gets, and then you can toss it in any direction you want and have it explode into that powerful energy you just put into it.
